Meyer came to America in 1892 and served as head of the art department of the University of Puget Sound for eight years.

He was also a portrait artist and did one of the official portraits of the governor, although the family can't be sure whether it was the state of Oregon or Washington.

His father was a noted orchestra leader, and his eight siblings all became musicians. Meyer took up the study of art as a young man, and spent eight years learning at the art academies of Berlin, Munich, and Dresden before moving to Oregon.
