Original oil painting on board "Lanai from Lahaina" by listed Hawaiian artist, David Howard Hitchcock (1861 - 1943), signed lower left, "Honolulu, HI" & dated 1923. As noted on the verso, this piece is from the estate of James Drummond Dole, the "Pineapple King" industrialist of Dole Food Co. who developed the pineapple industry in Hawaii at the turn of the century. Art measures 10" h x 16" w mounted in a frame measuring 14" x 19.5". 

Condition

Painting does show signs of crazing.

Long regarded as one of the most important interpreters of the Hawaiian landscape, David Howard Hitchcock had a lengthy and prolific career, spanning more than sixty years. Born in Hilo, Hawaii, he was the first Hawaii-born painter to receive formal art training in Paris. D. Howard Hitchcock did numerous paintings of volcanoes, which circulated widely enough to attract tourist attention to the islands. Exh: Paris Salon; Gump's (SF); Alaska-Yukon Expo (Seattle); St Francis Hotel; Panama-Calif. Expo; Honolulu Academy of Arts; GGIE; NY World's Fair. His work is in the collections of Honolulu Academy of Arts; Boston Museum; Oakland Museum & Bishop Museum (Honolulu).
