Etching portrait titled "Sylvia" by listed artist, J. Wells Champney (NY, MA, 1843-1903), signed lower left. Art measures 18.5" h x 15" w on paper measuring 33" x 30". Congressional stamp "28645 U", dated Sept. 21, 1889.

We offer in house shipping for the majority of the items that are sold in the auction. The exceptions being furniture, bulk or heavy items like marble statues or extremely fragile items. For these items, we recommend you work with a shipper. Shipping charges are not included in the winning hammer price. If you live over 4 hours from the auction house, we will assume that you would like your items shipped. Please let us know if you do not want them shipped if you are over 4 hours away from the auction house. The card that you registered with will be charged for all shipping charges and you will also receive an email with tracking information. 

Champney’s work has been exhibited at the Columbia Exhibition in Chicago (1893, 1898), The Tennessee Centennial Exposition, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Pennsulvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston & the Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA. He was elected into the National Academy of Design & was a member if the Salmagundi Art club. In 1880 he & his wife secured a contract to illustrate a series of articles for Century Magazine. For this endeavour the pair embarked on travel to North Africa, Spain and Portugal, visiting localities such as Tangier and Tetouan in Morocco, that had not been covered by any of the illustrated magazines at that time.
