Born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1921, Rex Mason studied ceramics at the California School of Fine Arts, known today as the San Francisco Art Institute. He went on to teach pottery at Montana State College, and later at the University of British Columbia from 1952-55, where he emphasized native materials and decorative themes. His own work focused on producing functional stoneware. In his wheel-thrown pieces, he often employed all over glazes, sometimes using techniques of sgraffito or porcelain inlays. His work has been included in the collections of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, and the Forrest L Merrill Collection. Rex Mason passed away in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2014.
