Lot 104:
19th century figure based on the sculpture by the master Renaissance, or Mannerist, sculptor Giambologna (Italian, 1529-1608). Expertly worked from patinated bronze, it depicts the Classical Roman god Mercury. He is shown wearing a winged helmet and holding a staff, known as the caduceus, in his left hand. It is supported by a gust of wind issuing forth from a mask, which depicts Boreas, the Greek personification of the north wind. The mask is set on a cylindrical plinth featuring cherub decorations in relief. Stands 26½" tall.
